“Even though we had a good shop, there are times
when we need hospital information technology expertise, but we might not need
to hire someone. We might need someone to come in and get PACS running, we might
need him for 3 or 4 months, CareTech is a hospital IT services company that can
find those resources, bring them online, then remove them when they’re no
longer necessary – rather than us having to find them and hire them on a
consultative basis. Those are some of the things we felt we could get with a hospital
IT outsourcing arrangement. We also felt that CareTech, specializing in information
technology in healthcare, with the number of hospitals it had, might give us a
little more clout in the healthcare technologies marketplace. When you have a
sole hospital system such as ours, going up against some of the major vendors
out there – we’re one hospital. If we have problems, CareTech can say, no,
we’re 11 hospitals, and you want to make good on that promise. So those were
some of the reasons we decided to outsource at least a portion of our healthcare
IT services structure. So now, what do they do? They’re our off-site data
center, they provide all the network operations, the help desk certainly was a
great addition, and they’ve also helped us very much on the security side,
which as you know, is very important. Important then, important now, according
